One trillion economy and decarbonization of capital intensive sectors for state of Maharashtra

In this report, India’s decarbonization strategies are highlighted, followed by the detailed analysis of Maharashtra’s pursuit of USD 1 trillion economy at the intersection of Economy-Energy-Environment dimensions in section three. Furthermore, the five main capital-intensive and carbon-intensive sectors were identified that will ensure not only the economic growth of the state but may also lead to severe environmental consequences. Section four provides the economic impact assessment of the five key sectors in Maharashtra. In section five, two scenarios are proposed – A High RE trajectory scenario where the share of RE in electricity mix is increased and sector-specific interventions to substitute coal as an energy input is analysed. Sector-wise decarbonization strategies are also proposed such that the negative externalities of the aforementioned sectors can be curtailed.
